In the U.S. and France, postcards showing babies being harvested like crops were once very popular. These "repopulation" images used early composite photography. Some people think they reflected early ideas about cloning, while others believe they were just meant to be funny. But behind the humor is a darker truth: in the U.S. and many other countries, buying and selling babies was legal and common. Children had no rights, and trains full of orphans were sent to underpopulated areas to work and be exploited. This became known as the Orphan Train Movement.
