When I was a teenager, I loved going to concerts, especially smaller shows where you could meet the bands afterward. I made a habit of telling every band I liked that their music was the sole reason I hadn’t killed myself, that it was literally the only thing keeping me alive. I would thank them earnestly. They were always kind—encouraging, sometimes inviting me to hang out at other tour stops. But the truth is, it was a lie. I never once considered suicide. I just wanted them to like me, to give me their attention.
